The purpose of the Institution is to make known and accessible the highly rated assets by a unique collection in Italy, of more than 50.000 items, witch go from naturalistic collections to scientific instruments, from machine models to hand-made objects and library references of high historical importance. Starting from this precious heredity, the Foundation aims at promoting a permanent activity of scientific culture, constituting an original laboratory where the proper use of historic scientific apparatuses go side by the side with modern technologies and new media. In April 2002 the President of the Italian Republic, honoured with his presence the inauguration of the Planetari of Florence jointly managed by the Institute and Museum of History of Science and the Astrophysics Observatory in Arcetri.
