Santa Maria Novella Station
The station was built in the thirties, upon the Michelucci’s project and represents an admirable example of Italian Rationalism, the architectural trend that is aimed to expressing the function of a building by its structure.
The choice of materials used for the building: glass, steel, and pietra forte, the type of stone used for the church of Santa Maria Novella, gives to this modernity gem, a good integration in its context.
The other commendable solution is the structure of the binary platforms, built without central support to give maximum extent and space, the platforms are supplied with wait-benches and bag-shelves turning around the squared pilasters.
This building, being innovative and breaking the preexistent schemes was obviously highly discriminated by some intellectuals such as Ugo Ojetti but it also had enthusiast supporters among which the groups headed by Elio Vittoriani, based at the café Le Giubbe Rosse located in piazza della Repubblica.
On track number 8 a commemorative plaque reminds the train that during World War II left the station loaded with the sad cargo of Jewish deportees.
An underground passage, an underground car park and a vexed bus shelter on the north side added in the eighties, discord with the surrounding space.
